More information can be found in the following press release by Lake Effect Community Arts.
The public is invited to attend the Word Reveal for the Power of Words Project, which is a mural project, to be painted on the People’s Store this July.
After the community nominated 20 unique words, voting commenced through on-line and paper ballots, for a total of nearly 1,500 ballots being cast.
Students from Casey Hinkson’s art class at Manistique Area Schools will be on hand with their own unique creations to take part in the reveal.
Jeff Gurnichoff, Iron Mountain artist and Project Coordinator will also take part in the ceremony on behalf of Mia Tavanotti, artist and founder of the Svelata Foundation.
Locally, the project is being spearheaded in collaboration between Schoolcraft Tourism and Commerce and Lake Effect Community Arts. Members of both organizations are being encouraged to participate, as well as local area dignitaries.
Funding is being provided in part through funds from CUPPAD’s ArtPlace grant, and in-kind and monetary contributions from businesses, organizations and individuals.
The word reveal ceremony will be recorded and the video will be shared with the business community in attendance at STC’s First Annual Believers and Achievers Celebration that evening. (It will also be available on both LECA’s and STC’s Facebook page the next day.)
When: Tuesday May 8, 2018 Time: 11:00 a.m. Where: People’s Store, Manistique (may be outdoors if weather permits)
About the Power of Words: The Power of Words Project is a humanitarian mural campaign designed to engage and inspire community members to participate in the creative process by coming together to select words that define the vision they hold for the future of their community. These words become the themes for monumental works of art designed by Mia Tavonatti, an internationally award-winning artist and native of Iron Mountain, and created by her and her team of professional muralists, local artists and student scholarship recipients, in prominent locations within the community.
